1. except
except 是“除……之外（不包括本身在内）”的意思，指同一类事物的总体中除去一部分。例如：
He gets up early every day except Sunday. 除星期天外，他每天早起。
We all succeed except him．除了他以外，我们都获得了成功。
Except that后面跟从句，语意与上同。例如：He has always been in good health except that he has had a slight headache in the past few days. 除了在过去几天里有些头痛之外，他身体一直很好。
2. expect for
expect for 是“除……之外”的意思，但对比的对象通常不是同一类事物。例如：
Your composition is quite good except for a few spelling mistakes. 你的作文写得非常好只是有几处拼写错误。
（composition与spelling mistakes 不属于同一类事物。）
Smith is a good man, except for his bad temper. 史密斯除了脾气不好外，是个好人。
（a good man与bad temper 不属于同一类事物。）
3. besides
besides 是“除了……之外，还有（包括本身在内）”的意思，具有肯定和附加的涵义，后接名词、动词-ing形式或代词。它与in addition to同义。例如：
She can speak Japanese besides English. 除英语外，她还会讲日语。
She can speak Japanese in addition to English. 除英语外，她还会讲日语。
试比较：
① We all went to the Great Wall except him. 除他之外，我们都去了长城。(他没有去长城。)
② We all went to the Great Wall besides him. 除他之外，我们大家也都去了长城。(他也去了长城。)
